![]() These stakes will last 5+ years if they are not hit by mowers, etc. Local sawmills can mill the stakes for less, they are expensive to ship. I found the best price break at over 1,000 shelters. A company out of Virginia called Conservation Services is able to sell the shelter and stake in bulk, but they are pricey. Utilize 1"x1" white oak or treated oak stakes at least 1' taller than the total shelter height. I have outstanding success with these shelters. Cutting them off? Let the trees break them apart? PVC electrical conduit - We've been using this lately. A few trees have grown around them, and they're hard/impossible to get out once this happens.Ĩ. All thread - work well, although they bend more than you'd like. 2"x 2" wood stakes - work well, but priceyħ. Bamboo - worked ok as stakes, but don't last more than 2-3 seasonsĦ. Not as durable as the hard plastic, but lasted a while.ĥ. Corrugated plastic style - Wound up with a bunch of these from a Craigslist purchase. Some have eventually bent over from wind/bears/etc, and they're strong enough to bend the tree over too.Ĥ. When weeds get in theses, and trees get bigger, I've noticed some bark rot from the wetness. "Hard plastic" - These seem to last the longest. They're not really strong enough to drag a tree down/sideways.ģ. One the harder plastic piece starts to break down, the tube is pretty much useless. They seem to get the fastest growth, but they disintegrate over time. I know we've tried a bunch of different varieties at our camp. I'm curious what kind of experience folks have with different tree tubes.
